India National Cricket Team have become the No.1 ranked ODI team in the ICC rankings after their 5-wicket win over Australia in the first ODI of the series in Mohali. The Men in Blue overtook arch-rivals Pakistan to go to the top of the rankings in the 50-over format.
India with their win over Australia in the first ODI has attained 116 ratings, surpassing Pakistan’s tally of 115 ratings. If they win one more game in the series, the Men in Blue will be heading into the ICC World Cup 2023 as a No.1 ranked team, which altogether will be a different boost for them.
India had a staggering outing against Australia as they were on the top with both bat as well as the ball. Opting to field first, Mohammed Shami was the shining light for the team as he picked up five wickets and kept chipping in for his team from time to time.
Australian batters David Warner (51), Steve Smith (41), Marnus Labuschagne (39), Cameron Green (31), Josh Inglis (45), Marcus Stoinis (29), and Pat Cummins (21*) batted well but they failed to the carry on the starts that they got. Apart from Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah picked one wicket each.
During the chase, India were off the flyer as Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) batted staggeringly well for India and added 142 runs for the opening partnership. Although, India lost quick wickets after that but stand-in captain KL Rahul (58*) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) took the game away from Australia and won by 5 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series.
With the win, India achieved a historic feat as they became the No.1 ranked team in all three formats of the game. India are just the second team after South Africa (2012) to occupy the top spot in the ICC rankings at the same time across formats. The Rohit Sharma-led side have been performing extremely well in the T20Is and Tests. They have held the positions for quite a long time and would be hoping to do the same in the 50-over format.
