Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his innings in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Mohali. He said that he was dreaming of playing innings like that and admitted that he was rushing things in the earlier games.
After a series of low scores under his belt and all the odds against his place in the ODI team, Suryakumar Yadav finally stepped up and sort of ticked one box in the 50-over format. The batter played a superb innings under pressure and guided India to a 1-0 lead over Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav came to bat when India lost Ishan Kishan and were tottering at 185/4. Despite the pressure of the scorecard along with the additional pressure of his previous failure, he batted quite maturely and it was a completely different SKY who we are used to watching.
Suryakumar Yadav didn’t play his natural aggressive game. He took time to settle him and mostly targeted ‘V’ for the boundaries. He played glorious straight drives throughout his innings and brought up a magical half-century, that took his side close to the target.
He looked to finish the innings early but was caught in the deep as he tried to play the flick. The right-hander ended with the knock of 50 runs off 49 balls. He batted with a strike rate of over 100 and also smashed 5 fours and 1 six in his innings.
Suryakumar Yadav said that although he couldn’t finish the game for his team, he’s happy with the result that went his way. He admitted that he kept thinking about what was going on with him in the ODIs. Speaking to broadcasters, he explained:
“I was dreaming of this type of innings when I started playing this format. Trying to bat deep and finishing the game, unfortunately couldn’t do it today but very happy with the result. I’d been wondering what had been happening for me in this format, the teams and bowlers were the same.”
I went back and reflected and realized I was probably rushing things – Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav further went on to say that he planned to play slow and take the game deep. He also talked about the straight drives he played and credited openers for the start they got. He elaborated:
“I went back and reflected and realized I was probably rushing things a bit so I decided to play slower and take it deep. I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep. This has come from the Chandu Pandit school of arts (on his straight drives). Really enjoyed watching the openers bat. Want to try and bat the same way, bat deep, try and win games for India.”
India won the first game of the series by the margin of 5 wickets. They will be next seen in action during the second ODI, which will take place on 24 September.
