In the wake of India???s dismal defeat against England in the first Test, former batsman Wasim Jaffer has suggested a change in the batting order of the hosts. England fashioned a stunning comeback in the game to beat India by 28 runs in Hyderabad and take the lead in the five-match IND vs ENG 2024 series.

The visitors were staring down the barrel after conceding a huge 190-run lead in the first innings. They were bowled out for just 246 before India scored 436 runs thanks to half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja.

India, however, failed to capitalize and ended up losing the game by 28 runs. England piled up a big total of 420 runs in their second innings to revive their chances. Ollie Pope was the architect of the big total as he played a stunning knock of 196. Set a target of 231 runs, India were bowled out for just 202 runs with left-arm spinner Tom Hartley picking up 7 wickets on his debut.

Wasim Jaffer suggests a change in the batting order

Ahead of the crucial second Test, Wasim Jaffer has urged Team India to change the batting order. On Monday (January 29), he took to X to state that captain Rohit Sharma should be demoted to No.3 while Shubman Gill should start to open the innings again. Last year, Gill voluntarily gave up the opening slot to bat at No.3 after Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped.

Wasim Jaffer stated that batting at No.3 is not helping Gill and he should be better off as an opener. The former opener also stated that Rohit would do well at No.3 because he is a good player of spin bowling as he wrote:

???Gill and Jaiswal should open and Rohit should bat at no.3 in 2nd test in my opinion. Waiting to bat for his turn isn???t helping Shubman, it???s better he opens the inn. Rohit plays spin really well, so batting at no.3 should not worry him too much.???

Both Rohit and Gill failed to impress in the first Test. While Rohit got the starts in both the innings, he failed to convert them as he was dismissed for 24 and 39. On the other hand, Gill scored 23 in the first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second.
