Team India batter Shubman Gill recently addressed criticism over his batting form, admitting that he was not able to perform up to his expectations. Shubman Gill said that he wants to maintain focus and move past setbacks to concentrate on the present moment.
Despite a promising start to his Test career, Gill faced scrutiny for his inconsistent performances leading up to the series against England. The right-handed batter hadn’t scored a half-century in 11 innings before the second Test match against England in Visakhapatnam.
The 24-year-old batter managed to score just 34 runs in India’s first innings. However, he scored a brilliant century in the second innings of the match. He scored 104 runs off 147 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. The home team won the match by 106 runs in Vizag.
The Punjab-born cricketer scored 91 runs in the second innings of the recent Test in Rajkot. The young batter is the second-leading run scorer for India in the ongoing series. He has amassed 252 runs in six innings at an average of 42, including one hundred and one fifty.
There Is Always Disappointment – Shubman Gill
Speaking to reporters days before the 4th Test, Shubman Gill reflected on his approach to handling failures. Gill emphasized the importance of disregarding external distractions and focusing on seizing the next opportunity in cricket.
“There is always disappointment, but it was more within myself and regarding my own expectations,” Gill said at a news conference in Ranchi on Wednesday.
“The outside noise didn’t really bother me. What’s important in such situations is to make the best use of the next opportunity. You have to forget the past and just focus on the next ball,” he added.
Shubman Gill has scored 1,292 runs in 23 Test matches at a disappointing average of 32.30. He has scored three centuries and five half-centuries during his brief international career.
Still Have The Same Mindset As I Did Earlier – Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill highlighted the importance of swiftly moving on from past performances, noting it as a key differentiator between good and average players. He stated that players should maintain personal expectations and contribute to the team’s success.
“The difference between a good player and an average player is in how quickly they can forget the previous innings whether good/bad and move forward. Players who are able to do this easily are those who are great players,” Gill further stated.
“Expectations you always have from yourself. You obviously want to contribute and want to be there for the team as much as possible. I still have the same mindset as I did earlier. It’s all about putting the past behind you and reacting to the current situation.”
India rebounded impressively after losing the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs. The hosts secured victories in the next two matches to take a 2-1 lead. The fourth Test is set to be played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, starting on February 23.
