Tom Hartley finally ended Indian batsman Jasprit Bumrah’s 26-ball stay at the crease as the right-handed batter ended up edging towards the slips. Bumrah was out for a duck on the fourth ball of the 78th over of the Indian innings and had added 26 runs along with Ravichandran Ashwin for the 9th wicket, out of which Ashwin made all the contribution.

The ball was pitched up by Tom Hartley but Jasprit Bumrah went for the drive, the ball took the thick outside edge and later he was caught brilliantly by Jonny Bairstow at the slips. Ashwin was unhappy with the shot selection of the pacer and gave an angry reaction as Bairstow grabbed the catch to send back Bumrah.

Most balls faced to Score Duck for India in Test:

0 (29) – Irfan Pathan v PAK (2005)
0 (29) – Suresh Raina v ENG (2011)
0 (29) – Rishabh Pant v ENG (2018)
0 (28) – Munaf Patel v WI (2006)
0 (26) – Jasprit Bumrah v ENG (2024)

However, soon after Jasprit Bumrah departed, Ravichandran Ashwin also walked back in the very next over of Rehan Ahmed. Ashwin ended up edging the ball and was caught by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes for 29 runs from 52 balls. The Indian cricket team was wrapped up for 255 runs in their second inning setting up a target of 399 runs for England to win in the second innings.

The Indian cricket team did not have the anticipated start. India lost both of their openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, for 13 and 17 runs in the span of two runs when they were still batting at 28/0. Shubman Gill took control soon after the hosts lost two quick wickets, combining with Shreyas Iyer to score 81 runs off 112 balls. Iyer appeared composed as he played several excellent strokes. Iyer was removed for 29 runs from 52 balls after failing to maintain his composure.

Rajat Patidar was removed for nine runs after he was unable to muster much of an innings. Shubman Gill kept his wicket despite the wickets falling from the other end because he had to earn it in front of almost 1.2 billion spectators. Along with Axar Patel, Gill set up a stand of 89 off 151 balls and eventually reached his hundred. Gill made sure that India’s lead surpassed 350 runs and was now 354 runs before his dismissal.

Axar Patel who was playing well, was dismissed for 46 runs from 84 balls and missed out on a much-deserved half-century. The Indian lower order was not able to add many runs and firstly KS Bharat was dismissed for 6 runs whereas, Kuldeep Yadav got out for a duck.

India now would be aiming to wrap up England and win the match by a very big margin. The onus will be on Jasprit Bumrah who took a six-wicket haul in the first innings and wrapped up the visitors with 253 runs. India also moved to the fifth spot in the World Test Championship 2023-25 standings after their loss in the first Test against England. India would look forward to overcome their loss from the first Test by winning the second match.
