It was a third consecutive win for India in the five-match Test series against England as they defeated the visitors by five wickets in Ranchi. Indian batsman Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 52 runs followed by wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel who remained not out on 39 runs as well. Both the batsmen anchored India’s successful run-chase and helped them win the series.

Indian batsman Shubman Gill while speaking after the match stated that England had put the hosts under the pump, but a decent start by openers lifted the pressure. Two back-to-back wickets had also put up the pressure on India, but Dhruv Jurel came in the lifted all the pressure from Gill. The right-handed batter added that the team needs to see the situation and play accordingly, also not giving maiden overs and picking singles was the mindset.

Shubman Gill opens up on India’s win in the fourth IND vs ENG Test

Shubman Gill said, “We were put under pressure by them, but we got a good start by our openers, losing couple of wickets put pressure. But Jurel came out and took the pressure off. You have to see the situation and play accordingly – they were bowling well and protecting the boundaries, also not giving maidens and keep picking the singles (was the mindset).”

Shubman Gill also revealed the conversation he had with Dhruv Jurel. The Indian batter stated that he told Jurel to play the same way he played in the first innings and negate the off-spinner, Shoaib Bashir. Gill also added that in the first innings, he didn’t use his feet as the ball wasn’t turning in the first innings, however, he used his feet in the second innings and kept the LBW out of the equation.

Shubman Gill said, “The first innings the ball was not turning much and hence I didn’t use my feet, but second innings I decided to take the LBW out of the equation by using my feet. It means the world to us, coming here and having to play the series with not much batting experience, having lost KL after the first Test.. but Rohit Bhai backed us and gave us the confidence to go out and play with freedom.”

This is the first time that India have chased down a total of over 150 runs in India during a Test match after 2013. The last India did so was against Australia. This is also the first time when England have lost a Test series under the reign of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. This was India’s 17th consecutive Test series win for India at home and the seventh after going 1-0 down in the series.

The pitch has also been a major factor in the ongoing IND vs ENG Test series. Many critics were fearing rank turners and predicted the matches to last under three days. However, the series has been a clear slap on their faces as the matches went on until the fourth day in the first four games and it never looked like that India were bossing the game on all the days.
