Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer was in awe of Tilak Varma’s impressive debut in the first T20I against West Indies in Trinidad. He said that the southpaw didn’t show nerves and it seemed like he was playing a club game or his state team.

Although India lost the first T20I of the series, debutant Tilak Varma was the biggest positive for the team. The Southpaw played a magnificent innings in the maiden outing for Team India and almost won the game for his side.

Tilak Varma opened his account with two massive sixes and played blistering strokes all over the park. The southpaw looked in full control throughout his innings but was caught in the deep as he tried to clear the fence to put his team in a dominating position.

Tilak Varma played an eye-catching knock of 39 runs off 22 balls. He batted with a strike rate of 177.27, smashing 2 fours and 3 sixes. His strike rate was the highest for the team with the top 5 batters failing to cross 120 strike rate.

Wasim Jaffer said that Tilak Varma was the only Indian batter who looked very comfortable on the crease and it reflected that he’s mentally strong.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he explained: “He looked impressive. There were no nerves at all. The way he started, it seemed like he was playing a club game or for his state team.

“No pressure at all. He came out and backed his game. That’s the good thing about him – it shows that he’s mentally very strong. He was the only one who looked very comfortable on this pitch.”

IND vs WI: If Varma had got 50 or 60, India would have got home – Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer pointed out that Tilak Varma would be disappointed with the way he got out and remarked that if he had scored 50 or 60 runs, India would’ve won the match.

He added: “The shots that he played, not just the big ones, even the slices through third man and the other shots, shows that he was in good form. He would be disappointed that he couldn’t score 20-odd more runs.

“If Varma had got 50 or 60, India would have got home. Sanju Samson’s run-out also cost them. He was looking good.”

West Indies won the first game of the series by 4 runs and took an early lead in the series. The second game will be played on 6th August (Sunday).
