Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta was in awe of Virat Kohli’s century against West Indies at the Queen’s Park in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He feels that the batter would be relieved after his innings and his ton is a monkey off his back.

Virat Kohli smashed his first overseas ton in Test cricket since 2018 as he played a rock-solid knock against West Indies in the ongoing second Test. The Indian batter, who was under quite a bit of pressure in the longest format of the game, replied to his critics in style.

Virat Kohli missed out on a ton in the first game, where he scored 76 runs, but made sure that he completes the unfinished job in the second game. In what was his 500th game, he set the stage on fire and went on to smash his 29th Test ton, surpassing great Sachin Tendulkar in the most number of centuries after 500 games.

Virat Kohli looked in complete control throughout his innings and played some breathtaking shots. He scored 121 runs off 206 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and made sure that he makes the 100th Test between India and West Indies a memorable one.

Deep Dasgupta said that getting to the 29th Test ton is a huge achievement and said that Virat Kohli worked hard for it. The former Indian cricketer also mentioned that numbers do number no matter what people say.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said: That’s a huge achievement – hundred No. 29. I think it was a really good innings and again something that didn’t come very easy to him. He really had to work for it, so you’ve got to give more credit for that.

“Absolutely yes. No matter what people say, numbers do matter. I’d be honest. When you look at our society as such, most of our judgment is based on numbers. More importantly, it’s just the fact that he hadn’t scored a hundred away from home, out of Asia I believe, in so many years.”

Deep Dasgupta further went on to say that the hundred would surely be a monkey off Virat Kohli’s and he would be relaxed.

He elaborated: “It’s not just about what everyone else is saying. It’s also about yourself. Virat is someone who has said that himself before as well – it’s about trying to prove himself. It’s not about what anyone else is saying or what people think. I think that would be a monkey off his back, that hundred. He would be relieved.”

Virat Kohli’s ton helped India post a first innings total of 438 runs. In reply, West Indies were 86/1 at stumps on Day 2.
