Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith believes Suryakumar Yadav’s batting approach is similar to that of AB de Villiers and that having a player like him benefits Indian cricket.

India may have been eliminated from the T20 World Cup, but Surya continued his batting brilliance on the New Zealand tour.

Regarding the white-ball format, particularly the T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav is the man of the moment. He made his debut last year and has since advanced quickly on the international stage, eventually becoming the top batsman in the world in the game’s shortest format.

He had already demonstrated his talent in the Indian Premier League by contributing to multiple game-winning hits for his team, the Mumbai Indians. But now that he’s secured his place in the Indian team’s lineup, the world is learning about the all-around talent he actually is.

His dynamism was on display at the just-finished T20 World Cup in Australia. The kinds of shots he demonstrated during the competition were a joy to witness for the Indian fans. Suryakumar finished second on the list of players with the most half-centuries, with three, and was the third-highest run scorer with 239 runs.

“I’ve been fortunate to see him while commentating”: Graeme Smith

Suryakumar is receiving appreciation from all over the world, not just from India. As per Graeme Smith, a former captain of South Africa, Surya’s batting style is strikingly similar to AB de Villiers’, and having a player like him is wonderful for Indian cricket.

“I’ve been watching Surya at the IPL for a long now. I had the good fortune to witness him while commentating. Every year, you can see him grow. You could tell he had talent. In many ways, it’s similar to watching AB. “The thinking is that he has started to become at the same level as skill and the ability to play the right shots at the right time,” Graeme Smith said at the SA20 India launch.

“It’s fantastic to have a player like Surya come through.” Everyone turns on the TV to watch a player like him because of his energy in the game. It’s thrilling, and it’s great for Indian cricket,”  Graeme Smith continued.

Suryakumar Yadav recorded his second T20I century in the second T20I of the three-match series in Mount Maunganui, blasting an unbeaten 111 off just 51 balls.
