India National Cricket Team all-format skipper Rohit Sharma had an extremely poor run both as a captain and as a batter in 2022 and he ended the year with a decade-long low on a dismal note.

Rohit Sharma became the all-format captain of Team India in 2022. Under his leadership, India dominated in almost every bilateral series. However, the same thing can’t be said about India’s performance in multi-nation tournaments.

Rohit Sharma-led India competed in two mega events – Asia Cup and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – in the year 2022. In the Asia Cup 2022, India lost against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage and failed to qualify for the summit clash.

In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, India finished as the Group 2 table-toppers and qualified for the semi-finals. However, Jos Buttler-led England hammered India by 10 wickets in the semi-final to knock them out of the marquee tournament.

Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai Indians (MI) to 5 Indian Premier League (IPL) championships, also failed as a captain in the IPL 2022. Under his leadership, MI finished in the 10th spot on the points table, with only 4 victories from 14 matches.

Talking about Rohit Sharma the batsman, the 35-year-old scored just 995 international runs in 39 matches and he struggled for both form and fitness. He hit just 6 half-centuries in the year 2022 and his runs came at an average of 27.63.

Rohit’s 995 international runs in 2022, is the first time since 2012, barring 2020 when he failed to breach the 1000-run mark. Notably, 2020 was the year when the world was hit by Covid-19 and Rohit played just 7 games that year, scoring 311 runs at an average of 51.83.

Rohit Sharma would have easily crossed the 1000-run mark had he participated in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. However, unfortunately, he got ruled out of the ongoing Test series due to a thumb injury.

Also, 2022 is the first year after 2012 when Rohit failed to register a single century, with his highest score being 76*. In 2022, Rohit scored 90 runs in 2 Tests at an average of 30.00 and 249 runs in 8 ODIs at an average of 41.50. Talking about T20Is, he played 29 games and scored 656 runs at an average of 24.29 and a strike rate of 134.42.

In IPL 2022, Rohit failed miserably with the bat and he struggled throughout the cash-rich league. He scored just 268 runs at an average of 19.14 in 14 games, with the best score of 48. It was the first time he failed to hit a single fifty in the entire season.
