Suryakumar Yadav, a teammate of Team India, is expected to be available for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy beginning with their second group stage encounter until national duty calls. The premier domestic tournament, which starts on December 13, has placed the 41-time winners in the Elite B Group.

Mumbai is scheduled to play Andhra away from home to open their red-ball season. Hyderabad will be their opponent in their opening game at BKC on 20.

Suryakumar has had a demanding schedule as a member of Team India’s white-ball squad. As part of the T20 World Cup preparations, the team had a hectic schedule in 2022. Before taking a break from the forthcoming Bangladesh trip, the Mumbai-born batsman has played 44 matches this year.

“Surya has been on the road playing white-ball cricket for India for the past 75 days, he has just returned home and is totally exhausted. He will take a short break, and come back refreshed. He will skip Mumbai’s first Ranji match, but he will play for the domestic giants in their second match, from December 20, against Hyderabad at BKC.”

Last year, Mumbai reached the Ranji Trophy final before losing to Chandrakant Pandit’s Madhya Pradesh. They’ve already won their first Syed Mushtaq Ali award of the season. Mumbai were ousted in the quarter-finals of the just-ended Vijay Hazare Trophy by Uttar Pradesh.

The right-handed batter’s spot on the national team’s limited-overs roster has likely been secured. His desire to participate in a Test match, though, is still a long way off because he hasn’t made it into the starting lineup.

Last year, Suryakumar was taken into consideration when the run-producing abilities of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane fell short of expectations. But the Mumbai-born player’s wait continues as Shreyas Iyer essentially locks up the No. 5 slot and Pujara resumes his form after a good county stint.

Suryakumar might become an all-format player by separating himself from a potential middle-order place for Team India with a great Ranji season for Mumbai.
