India defeated Bangladesh by 188 runs on Day 5 of their first Test match on Sunday at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, defending a goal of 513. On Day 5, the visitors bowled the hosts out for 324 in the opening session.
On Day 4, Zakir Hasan scored his first century, setting up a thrilling final day of play. With 224 balls, Zakir scored 100 runs, including 13 fours and a six. Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan started their batting on Day 5, although the latter lost his wicket rather early.
Shakib put up a solo performance, scoring 84 runs off 108 balls, including six sixes and six fours, for a half-century. But after he was out, Bangladesh quickly lost the rest of their wickets. In the meantime, Kuldeep Yadav claimed three victims and Axar Patel claimed four wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings. Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, and R Ashwin bagged a dismissal each.
“It was a really good wicket to bat”: Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan believes it was a great wicket to bat on over the five days and praises Zakir Hasan’s performance in the second innings.
“It was a really good wicket to bat on but we didn’t bat well (in the first innings). Playing after 5-6 months, wasn’t ideal but there should be no excuses. A lot of credit to India for the way they bowled. They bowled in partnerships and created pressure,” Shakib Al Hasan said.
“Zakir Hasan has been scoring a lot of runs in domestic runs, that’s why we picked him. Hopefully, he scores a lot more centuries for Bangladesh. We have to play good cricket for all five days. We have to play four good innings to be able to get a result, especially against India,” Shakib Al Hasan during the Post-match presentation.
With this victory, India moves up to third place on the WTC point standings. If South Africa loses the current Gabba Test, they would go to second. India still has five Tests left in this cycle, including four at home versus Australia. India lost both of the ODIs there, and the upcoming Test is being played there.
