IND vs BAN: Watch - Shreyas Iyer Survives As Balls Don't Fall Off Stumps In 1st Test

A strange incident took place in the first test between India and Bangladesh on Day 1 of the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Ebadot Hossain bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to Shreyas Iyer, who was batting at 77, and the ball crashed onto the stumps, but the bails refused to come off their grooves.

After the visitors were reduced to 112 for 4, vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara and batsman Shreyas Iyer shared a 149-run fifth-wicket stand. Iyer had not even reached his half-century when Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan dropped him behind the stumps, and he was dropped again by pacer Ebadot Hossain when he attempted a big shot off all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra believes that batsmen should be given out if the ball makes contact with the stumps and the bails light up, rather than requiring the bail to fall completely. The current rule states that the bail must fall completely for a batter to be bowled.

Aakash Chopra took to the social media platform Twitter to express displeasure with the rule. and wrote, “Zing Bails are a bit of a joke… Honestly…if it lights up, it should be OUT.”

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer finally ran out of luck and was dismissed for 86. Bangladesh pacer Ebadot Hossain bowled him with a brilliant delivery as the ball straightened just enough to beat Iyer’s defense on the final ball of the eighth over of Day 2 and take the off-stump with it.

Modern-day bails are comparatively heavier than traditional wooden bails. There are many instances where the ball hit the stumps but didn’t bail. The Australian batsman David Warner has survived in both Tests and ODIs. Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Dimuth Karunaratne, Quinton de Kock, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are other batsmen who have benefited from this rule.
