Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said it was a hard-fought series for them against England after losing the Edgbaston Test by seven wickets. England made a come-from-behind victory to square the five-match Test series 2-2.

After having dominated the final session on Day 4, Joe Root (142*) and Jonny Bairstow (114*) carried on the chase nonchalantly and raced towards their hundreds.

It was Bairstow who hit Mohammed Shami for a couple of fours early in the day and it looked like the England gloveman would reach the three-figure mark first against his Yorkshire teammate.

But once Root found the inside edge off Jasprit Bumrah for a boundary behind the wickets, the former England skipper smashed a flurry of boundaries to reach his 28th Test ton, guiding one over the gully for a four off Mohammed Siraj. As Root accelerated in his innings, Bairstow bided his time to reach the three-figure score.

Root took Shardul Thakur to the cleaners and brought the fashionable reverse scoop for a six. The Yorkshireman reverse swept Jadeja for a boundary before stealing a single to take England past the finishing line in the morning session of the final day.

“A game which had its highs and lows. Always a great feeling to contribute for my team, even though we fell short. A hard fought series where the competition was at its best,” Jadeja tweeted.

India failed to defend a target three times in a row in overseas Tests after suffering losses to South Africa in Johannesburg and Cape Town early in January and went down 1-2 despite winning the first Test in Centurion.
