ENG vs IND: Cannot Drop Virat Kohli Straightaway Because Of Lack Of Runs - Ashish Nehra

Former Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra asserted that dropping Indian batter, Virat Kohli, is not the right way to go as he has earned his place in the side having scored consistently for a long time.

Kohli’s slump since the pandemic began has been a major concern. He hasn’t scored a century in any format since November 2019 and the lean patch doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon.

“It’s not the first time that an out-of-form player has been given a rest. I admit that if a player isn’t consistent for a long time, he faces the axe. For example, Virat Kohli. He has scored ample runs in international cricket and has done so much for the country.”

“So, you cannot just drop him straightaway because of his lack of runs. Yes, he hasn’t been consistent and he himself would be knowing that he hasn’t performed up to his caliber. But dropping an individual is not always a solution,” Nehra told News18 CricketNext.

Nehra also felt that Rohit Sharma hasn’t scored runs at the top either but there are no calls for his exclusion from the side. The duo will hit their stride once they get a big knock under their belt.

“There’s so much cricket happening around. And if Virat hasn’t got runs in the T20Is, so didn’t Rohit. Neither they have had a good IPL season. But now the latter scored got a fifty in the ODIs which majorly adds to his confidence,” he also added.

Kohli has a few more opportunities to cement his spot in the Indian T20I side before the squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia is picked.
