Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra lashed out at England for their futile aggressive approach against India in the first One Day International at The Oval.

On Tuesday (July 12), the Rohit Sharma-led side thrashed England by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. A fiery Jasprit Bumrah inspired England’s capitulation for 110 in 25.2 overs. Jos Buttler & co were left bewildered in the search for answers to Bumrah’s swing and bounce on a day the Indian speedster rattled England’s top order consisting of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root to muster career-best figures of 6 for 19.

Butler was the only batter who looked confident facing the Indian bowlers and kept finding the gaps for boundaries. However, the England skipper chose to counterattack instead of hanging around at the crease and post a decent target.

As a consequence, Buttler pulled away a short ball off Mohammed Shami only to find Suryakumar Yadav at deep backward square leg.

It was not a 110-run pitch: Aakash Chopra

Chopra questioned England’s aggressive batting tactics in the 50-over format, where the aggressive approach will hit them heavily. The popular commentator asked England to assess the condition and situation of the game before taking any step forward.

“What is this England team? In the last match, it is okay for wickets to fall one after the other, but once you see the conditions, two things are very important – one is to respect the conditions and the other is to respect the situation. Your clothes come off at times when you do goondaism (thuggery),” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“It was not a 110-run pitch, agree it was not a 300-run pitch but could you have not reached 225? Do you not have that much batting also? That begs a question to be asked that the expansive strokeplay you want to do, the flip side of the story is that once in a while you will be bowled out for 110.

“Some of the shots, what was Liam Livingstone doing, playing while walking, the big shot Jason Roy played. There were some good balls, which you couldn’t have done anything about. I am saying there was a fielder placed in the deep for Buttler, the team had already lost six wickets, but shot after shot, the former Indian batter added.

England and India will play the second ODI match at the Lord’s on Thursday (July 14). The day also marks England’s third anniversary of lifting the 2019 World Cup at the same venue.
