Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant continued his excellent form in Tests, smashing his fifth century in the longest format when India was in a dire situation on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test.

Pant walked in after Matthew Potts had dismissed Virat Kohli with the visitors struggling at 72/4. Shreyas Iyer played a few exquisite shots before being strangled down the leg side.

Unfazed, Pant began playing a typical counter-attacking knock with Ravindra Jadeja at the other end holding the fort down. Pant set the ball rolling against Jack Leach, whom he smashed a four, four, and a six off consecutive balls.

At Tea, the duo had taken India to 174/5, nullifying the threat of the English pace attack. Following the conclusion of the break, they upped the ante further, taking a liking to the young Potts.

As runs began to leak, the English shoulders dropped and Pant kept asserting his dominance. He danced down the track multiple times, and even tried to reverse ramp – all against the great James Anderson in a bid to ensure the veteran gets unsettled.

He burst into the nervous nineties with a couple of risky shots against Leach before sensibly reaching the milestone with a double off of Stuart Broad. His 88-ball century is the fastest hundred by an Indian wicket-keeper.

Additionally, it is his 4th hundred outside Asia, one more than the combined tally of all the other wicket-keepers who have represented India in the longest format of the game.
