Former India cricketer Karsan Ghavri believes that Virat Kohli should have led India in the recently concluded rescheduled Test match against England instead of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

India all-format captain Rohit was tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the rescheduled Test match against England at the Edgbaston, Birmingham.

After Rohit couldn’t recover in time for the match, the BCCI appointed premier pacer Bumrah as India’s captain for the match. Bumrah did a good job in the match both as a captain and as a player. However, India lost the match by 7 wickets after England chased down record-breaking 378 runs in the 4th innings of the match.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Karsan Ghavri, who played 39 Tests and 19 ODIs from 1974 to 1981, said that Bumrah was unable to execute the plans that were made by Rahul Dravid and other Indian coaches.

“Bumrah has never captained any team. Forget about a Ranji Trophy team, he has not even led a club side. Look, a captain’s mind is totally different.

“He needs to keep thinking about making field placements and effecting bowling changes and strategising throughout. In the dressing room, I’m sure [head coach] Rahul Dravid and the other coaches made a lot of plans, but when the 11 players go onto the field, the captain must execute them. Bumrah couldn’t do that,” Ghavri told Mid-Day.

Kohli should have stepped up and said that I will take up the responsibility to lead – Karsan Ghavri

The 71-year-old Ghavri added that India were in a difficult situation after Rohit got ruled out and Kohli should have taken the captaincy responsibility for the rescheduled Test against England.

“When Rohit Sharma was not available for this Test [having tested positive for COVID-19], Kohli should have stepped up and said that I will take up the responsibility to lead this team. Winning and losing is a part of the game, but in such a difficult situation, I felt Kohli should have put his hand up,” he mentioned.
