The 31-year-old India National Cricket Team opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been added to India’s squad for the one-off Test against England National Cricket Team, as per a report in ESPNcricinfo.
Agarwal was originally not included in India’s squad for the one-off Test against the England National Cricket Team. However, he has been called up for the Test game due to the unavailability of KL Rahul and doubts over Rohit Sharma’s availability. Currently, India only have one proper opener in the squad, which is Shubman Gill.

Notably, Rahul had suffered a groin injury and was ruled out of the five-match T20I series against South Africa at home. Also, he has not yet recovered and will miss the rescheduled Test against England.
Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma was tested positive for Covid-19 as per the result of a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday (June 25).
The news of Rohit being Covid-19 positive came after the third day’s play of the warm-up match between India and Leicestershire. Rohit didn’t bat for India in the second innings of the warm-up game and in the first innings, he had scored 25 runs.
Mayank Agarwal To Fly Out To England On Monday
The same report further stated that the 31-year-old opening batsman Mayank Agarwal will fly out to England on Monday (June 27) and link up with the rest of the Indian squad this evening.
There are no mandatory quarantine protocols in England, as per the latest government rules, and Agarwal will not have to undergo any quarantine. Also, if Rohit fails to recover in time Mayank can be included in the India playing XI directly and he can play the match.
Mayank Agarwal had opened for India in their last two series against South Africa and Sri Lanka. In the South Africa Test series, he performed well but in the Sri Lanka Test series, he struggled for runs.
During the Sri Lanka series, which was played in March, he was able to score only 59 runs from two matches, at an average of 19.66, as a result, he was dropped from the Indian Test squad for the one-off Test against England.
Meanwhile, the 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1.
Both India and England will have new captains in the last Test match of the series as Virat Kohli and Joe Root have been replaced by Rohit Sharma and Ben Stokes. Also, India have a 2-1 lead in the Test series.
