When questioned how much of that influenced his tactics and strategy when it came to bowling at England’s top players in an interview with Mark Butcher for Sky Sports before, the third and final game on Saturday, Chahal, who has represented India at international chess youth championships, thought back to those days.

“Yes, chess undoubtedly helped me develop patience. Sometimes even when you are bowling well, you still do not get any wickets, so you have to be patient. I always think of ways they can attack me, so I always use my strength and change my tempo, which helped me” Chahal said.

When asked about his friendship with skipper Rohit Sharma, the 31-year-old said, “My IPL debut was under him in 2013.” I get along well with him. When you are not getting wickets, talk to your captain about what you can do and what field to set up. If your A plan fails, you fall back on your B plan.”
