Stuart Broad Concedes 35 runs In An Over vs Jasprit Bumrah, Registers Unwanted Record For Most Expensive Over In Test Cricket

Jasprit Bumrah came into his own while batting for the first time as India’s captain. He struck 35 runs against Stuart Broad in an over which is the most in the history of Test cricket. Broad had just picked up his 550th Test wicket when he got the wicket of Mohammad Shami, but he would have never imagined what would follow.

It was just the third over with the 2nd new ball but Bumrah had come all guns blazing.

India’s lower-order batter had last year showed that they could stay on the crease and they put a price on their wickets. In fact, India’s victories at Lords and at the Oval were both because India’s lower order contributed important runs.

In the last Test match as well Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah scored important runs and helped India put up a score of above 400.

It Was A Deja Vu Moment For Stuart Broad

Stuart Broad had been hit for 6 sixes by Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 T20 World Cup. In 2022, against Jasprit Bumrah in a Test Match after he had taken 55o Test wickets he conceded 35 runs. This is the highest number of runs conceded in a single over of a Test Match by a bowler. His longstanding bowling partner James Anderson was hit for 28 runs by George Bailey in the 2013 Ashes while his teammate Joe Root had hit Keshav Maharaj for 28 runs at Port Elizabeth a couple of years ago.

Batting legend Brian Lara too had hit 28 runs against RJ Peterson of South Africa in 2003.

England would have hoped to clean India’s lower order batters for low scores but vital contributions from Shami and Bumrah spoiled their plans completely. In the end, India got all-out for 416 with James Anderson picking his 32nd 5-wicket haul.
