Rohit Sharma and co. began the ODI series with a blast as they defeated hapless England in the first ODI at the Kennington Oval on Tuesday. With the win, India takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series.

After winning a toss that proved to be crucial, Rohit opted to field first and he was backed brilliantly by the new ball bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah started the downfall with a double-wicket maiden over.

Mohammed Shami joined in on the action and the duo ran through the top order, with Bumrah taking four wickets in a spell that read 5-2-9-4, of which six runs came off wides.

Jos Buttler tried to stick around and top-scored with 30 but he fell to the short ball. England looked to fall well below their worst-ever score of 86 but a ninth-wicket partnership between David Willey and Brydon Carse ensured they got over it.

Bumrah ended with career-best figures of 6/19 which is also the third-best for an Indian in ODIs and the fourth-best in England. Shami chipped in with three wickets of his own while Prasidh Krishna took the remaining wicket.

In the run chase, there were nervy moments early on with Shikhar Dhawan almost throwing his wicket away while taking a single. Apart from plays and misses, both Rohit and Dhawan looked comfortable thereafter.

Rohit was in prime form as he pulled and hooked his way to a 44th fifty in ODIs. Dhawan at the other end hung around, getting himself some much-needed batting practise as India eventually chased down the 111-run target in the 19th over.
