IND vs IRE: WV Raman Feels Venkatesh Iyer Could Open For India In T20I Series vs Ireland

WV Raman feels that the 27-year-old all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer could open the innings for India National Cricket Team in the upcoming two-match T20I series against the Ireland National Cricket Team.

Venkatesh Iyer, after his success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), got his maiden T20I call-up for the home series against New Zealand. He did a decent job for India in that series to retain his place in the squad.

After that, he played the ODI series against South Africa and the T20I series against Sri Lanka and West Indies, where he did a good job despite batting in the middle-order, rather than his favoured opening position.

Venkatesh Iyer did not have a very good run in the Indian Premier League 2022 still he retained his place in the Indian squad for the five-match T20I series against South Africa.

However, he did not get the opportunity to play any of the games against the South Africa National Cricket Team at home as India fielded an unchanged playing XI in all five matches of the series.

Great opportunity to give chances to new players – WV Raman

Former India batter WV Raman said that the inexperienced India players can be given the opportunities to play in the two-match T20I series against Ireland.

He added that the all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer is one of the players who did not get many opportunities at the right number so he could open the innings for India in the Ireland T20Is.

“This is a great opportunity to give chances to new players and those who have not got too many chances in the last one year,” Raman told News24.

“Venkatesh Iyer was in the team but he did not get too many opportunities at the right number. He probably has chances of opening also here,” said Raman.

The first match of the two-match T20I series between the India National Cricket Team and Ireland National Cricket Team will be played at The Village, Malahide, Dublin on Sunday, June 26.
