Veteran India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has lavished praise on the young opening batsman Shubman Gill after his selection in India’s T20I squad for the three-match series against New Zealand National Cricket Team.

The 23-year-old opener has already represented Team India in Tests and ODIs and has played some impactful knocks at the international level. However, he is yet to play the shortest international format of the game. He will have a chance to finally make his T20I debut in the ongoing series against the Black Caps.

During a discussion on Cricbuzz, Karthik stated that Gill has a lot of potential and it was only a matter of time before he got picked in the squad for T20Is.

“You just get the feeling that it was inevitable after a player of his class and ability didn’t play T20 cricket for India. There were two things, one that competition is immense in India and the fact that you are needed to do more than expected and he’s come good in the last few months,” Karthik was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.

Notably, the first T20I between the Men In Blue and the Black Caps, which was set to be played at the Sky Stadium, Wellington on Friday, November 18, was abandoned due to rain without a ball bowled.

Karthik further said that the Indian management expects something big out of Gill.

“No praise is enough for him for the fact that we always highlight and speak about. It shows that we expect something big out of him. He is a big bucks player for the Gujarat Titans and he showed his mettle,” he added.

Shubman Gill was acquired by the IPL 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans (GT), for INR 8 crore ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction.

He performed brilliantly with the bat for GT as he scored 483 runs in 16 matches at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.33, including 4 half-centuries.
