On Thursday, former India head coach Ravi Shastri stated that India has the talent to play white-ball cricket similarly to England, particularly in T20 Internationals. The former all-rounder advised India to identify young people for responsibilities in the run-up to the T20 World Cup as soon as possible.

Ravi Shastri was speaking to the press in a video interaction on the eve of India’s T20I series against New Zealand. Shastri praised England’s strategy, saying they were the team that “took the bull by the horns” and focused on role clarity and freedom in T20Is even if that meant accomplished seniors were kept out of the T20I team.

India Has Got A Wealth Of Resources And It Can Start From This Tour: Ravi Shastri

The team will begin to identify T20I specialists in the T20I series against New Zealand, which begins November 18, according to India’s acting head coach VVS Laxman, and Ravi Shastri agreed that this is the best course of action.

As a result of their failure to get past the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2022, India’s strategy in the T20I format has come under scrutiny.

After 2021’s World Cup saw an early departure, Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid embarked on the challenge of finding the winning combination for the event in Australia. India, however, entered with a similar lineup and suffered the price for their lack of courage.

“There’s an opportunity with this team in the future to identify roles for players, identify match-winners, and go pretty much on the template of England,” Ravi Shastri said on Thursday.

“They are one team that really caught the bull by the horns after the 2015 World Cup. They sat down and said they are going to identify the best players for that format of the game – whether it’s T20 or 50-over cricket.

Which meant that if they are some senior players, and have to sit out, so be it. And they got in youngsters who were fearless, and could adapt to that pattern of the game.

“It’s a template that can be followed easily, India has got a wealth of resources and it can start from this tour. It’s a fresh young side, you can identify, groom this team,” he added.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, who was rested for the trip of New Zealand along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya will serve as India’s captain.

Many former cricket players support Hardik, who won the IPL 2022 championship with the Gujarat Titans, who are new to the league, to take over as permanent captain. Ravi Shastri agreed and added that it will be challenging for Rohit to captain India in all three game types.
