Two of India’s young pacers, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik, were handed their ODI debut caps on Friday when team India took on New Zealand in the 1st ODI of the 3-match series. Both Arshdeep and Umran were a part of India’s T20 squad in the New Zealand T20I series with both of them having already made their T20I debut for the country.

India and New Zealand collided in the first game of the three-match ODI series at Eden Park in Auckland. The Men in Blue have already won the 3-match T20I series 1-0 after two games of the series were washed out. Shikhar Dhawan will be leading the Indian troop in the ODI series.

The Indian team management has set their sights on the 2023 ODI World Cup which is all set to take place in India next year. Considerably, there will be a few fresh faces inducted into the ODI squad to give some players game time and assess their skill set before finalizing the World Cup squad.

In the same regard, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik were given their ODI debut caps on Friday. While Arhsdeep received his debut cap from Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan, Umran Malik received his ODI debut cap from the Indian Head coach for the series, VVS Laxman.

Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan said at the toss, “It’s an amazing place, I enjoy playing over here. No issues batting first, I would have bowled first. I feel the wicket is a bit sticky but the sun is out and it should dry out soon. With this team, we have played a few series earlier as well. It’s a good opportunity for all the youngsters to perform and show their talents.”

“We are very fortunate that we’ve got Indians all over the world and they keep supporting us, we are grateful for it. We’ve got 2 debutants – Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik,” the skipper further added.
