Shardul Thakur was over the moon after he received praise on Twitter from fellow Mumbaikar and India cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar after he picked his maiden fifer in Test cricket on the ongoing second Test against South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Thakur, who came onto bowl as a second change bowler, took over a load of the third pacer after Mohammed Siraj got injured and struggled with his hamstring on day two of the second Test. He got the ball to swing and seam and made life difficult for the Proteas batters.

Shardul started by dismissing Proteas skipper Dean Elgar for 28, which triggered the fall of wickets, removing Keegan Petersen (62), Rassie van der Dussen (1), Temba Bavuma (51), Kyle Verreynne (21), and Marco Jansen (21). Thakur ended up with his career-best Test and First-Class figures of 7/61 as South Africa was bundled out for 229 runs, keeping their lead to 27 runs.

It’s Always Good To Hear From Him, It Is A Morale Booster: Shardul Thakur On Getting Praise By Sachin Tendulkar

The 30-year-old Shardul Thakur came forth when the Indian team was looking to break stubborn partnerships between Proteas batters from time to time and he delivered in heap. His 7/61 proved to be the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler against South Africa in Test cricket. Ravichandran Ashwin’s 7/66 in Nagpur in 2015 was the previous best.

He received praise from many pundits and cricket experts on social media for his performance. And one of them was none other than India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

He wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations to @imShard on picking up 7 wickets with his steady bowling and variations. Good support by the others.”

During a chat with India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey for the BCCI, Shardul Thakur was elated at getting praise from Sachin Tendulkar. He said that it is always a morale booster getting praiseful words from the ‘God’ of cricket, Tendulkar. He also recalled his encouraging words in matches the two played together.
