Indian opener KL Rahul is captaining the national side in the ongoing second Test match against South Africa being played at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg starting from January 3, 2022. This came after regular captain Virat Kohli was ruled out of the match due to an upper back spasm.
India team is coming into this match with a lead of 1-0 having won the first Test match of the three-Test series in Supersport Park in Centurion. It was the first-ever win by an Asian side in Test matches at the venue, breaching the Proteas fortress, so to speak. India won the match by 130 runs.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul won the toss and decided to bat first with Hanuma Vihari replacing Virat Kohli in the playing XI.
KL Rahul was quoted by ESPNCricinfo saying: “Unfortunately Virat has had an upper back spasm and hopefully he’ll recover for the next Test.”

“It is every Indian player’s dream to captain his country. Really honored and looking forward to this challenge. We have had a few good wins here and hopefully we’ll look to continue that. Hanuma Vihari comes in place of Virat. Just the one change. It was a good Test at Centurion overall. We really performed well as a team and are really excited about this match,” he added.
The BCCI in their official statement revealed that the BCCI medical team will be monitoring Kohli during the course of this Test match. If he had played in this Test, it would have been his 99th match in the format for India.
Jasprit Bumrah Named Vice-Captain Of The Indian Test Side For The Second Test
Meanwhile, KL Rahul was named Virat Kohli’s vice-captain for the South Africa Test series after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the tour due to a left hamstring injury. Rahul was recently named the captain of the Indian ODI side that will play three matches against South Africa at the completion of the Test series.
It was the first time KL Rahul captained India in an official capacity and the BCCI also revealed that Jasprit Bumrah will be Rahul’s vice-captain for this second Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain for the 2nd Test,” the statement read.
South Africa made two changes in their playing XI, with Kyle Verreynne replacing Quinton de Kock who retired from Tests after the Centurion match and Duanne Olivier made his South Africa return in place of Wiaan Mulder.
