Former Indian player Reetinder Sodhi criticised Indian team management for experimenting with Suryakumar Yadav as an opener in the ongoing T20I series against West Indies.

On Monday, Suryakumar opened the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma for the second time in the series. Rohit got dismissed on the first ball of the match to Obed McCoy.

Suryakumar Yadav is best suited at No.4: Reetinder Sodhi

Suryakumar made 11 runs in six balls before he poked one behind to the keeper off McCoy. The West Indies pacer registered the best bowling figures in T20Is from his country – 6 for 17 from four overs. India were bowled out for 138 in 19.4 overs and eventually lost the game by five wickets.

Sodhi said Suryakumar Yadav is suitable at No.4 and shouldn’t be shuffled from that position.

“Some mistakes are such that they are completely out in the open. Any layman understands the fact that Suryakumar Yadav is best suited at No.4 so do not tamper with his position,” Sodhi told India News Sports.

“Even if you do, just do not repeat it after it does not pay off. The Indian team management have to change their thought process,” he added.

Why is the team looking out for more options when you have good openers: Reetinder Sodhi

With 419 in 13 innings at 32.33, Ishan Kishan has scored the most for India in T20Is this year. However, the Jharkhand player has been warming the bench despite having the talent as a promising opener who can take on the opposition from the word go.

“Experimentation is fine, it is a good thing, but this is too much. It may be over trying or desperation. When you already have good openers, who are proven match winners, then why is the team looking out for more options,” Sodhi said.

“When the new tactic is failing, why are you not learning from this? The Indian team has a lot to ponder,” he added.

The third T20I match between the two sides will be played on Tuesday at Warner Park in St Kitts.
