Former Indian player Ravi Shastri said Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have a lot of talent when it comes to their batting. Jadeja returned to the T20I side after missing out the three-match ODI series owing to a knee injury.
Jadeja scored 16 runs in 13 balls in the first T20I and picked the wicket of West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder. Jadeja scored a century in the rescheduled fifth Test against England and made 46 in the first T20I against them to put India in a competitive position.
Axar Patel has realised that he wasn’t doing justice to his potential: Ravi Shastri
Axar replaced Jadeja in the ODI leg against West Indies and played in the format more than four years later. Axar starred in the second ODI, which India won by two wickets. The all-rounder was unbeaten on 64 off 35 deliveries, hammering three fours and five sixes at a strike rate over 182.
Shastri, who was India’s head coach until the 2021 T20 World Cup last year, said Axar has found his potential as a batter.
“Jadeja has improved vastly. He has realised his potential. I think, on this tour, even Axar Patel has realised that he wasn’t doing justice to his potential as a batsman. Both of these players have a lot of talent when it comes to the batting department. They will add a lot of balance to the Indian team if they continue in this fashion,” Shastri said during his commentary stint on FanCode.
India beat West Indies in 1st T20I
India posted 190/6 in the first innings thanks to fifty from skipper Rohit Sharma (64) and late cameo by Dinesh Karthik. Karthik carried forward his brilliant run since staging his return to the national side, he was unbeaten on 41 off 19 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, striking at 215.79.
India restricted West Indies for 122 for 8 at the end of the game to win by 68 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
India and West Indies will move to St Kitts to play the second T20I match on August 1 at the Warner Park.
