Salman Butt, a former Pakistan captain, praised Shubman Gill after the Team India batsman hit a fine half-century in the first ODI of the West Indies series on Friday (July 22).
Butt stated on his YouTube channel that Gill’s outstanding knock was the highlight of the competition for him. He remarked on how the right-timing handers of the ball have a lazy elegance to them.

“The way Shubman Gill played was the best part of the show for me. He performed admirably. He has a lot of moments, and there is a sloppy quality to him. He times the ball so well that the action replay shows him doing it.”

Gill fascinated audiences with his shotmaking during his 64-run knock in his first ODI since December 2020. Gill’s sloppy running between the wickets proved to be his eventual downfall, as the 22-year-old was run out in India’s 18th over.
Salman Butt on Shubman Gill’s dismissal:
Butt advised Shubman Gill not to be sluggish when running, particularly when he was in such excellent form.
Besides, Butt believed that if the brilliant young man had not made the mistake, he might have reached the 100-run milestone.
The batter had plenty of time to finish the run, Butt noted. He added: “However, I think Gill might not have anticipated the fielder to throw the ball at his end.”

“Shubman Gill’s departure was not a result of bad luck. He was careless. He had plenty of time and ought should have moved more quickly.
“He anticipated that the fielder would not go for the throw, but he was pretty carefree about it. It should not be so lazy when you are playing so well. He lost a hundred dollars, and India most likely lost an additional 50 runs.”
The two teams will square off again on Sunday (July 24) at Queen’s Park Oval.
