Former Indian player Parthiv Patel mentioned the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the reason behind young players bringing aggression in their gameplay.

Patel’s comments referred to India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh staring at West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers after dismissing him in the first T20I match on Friday in Trinidad.

While chasing 191 in the second innings, Mayers got a great start with a four off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and followed it with a six against Arshdeep over long-on. Mayers sent the ball through extra cover for another boundary. But Arshdeep was the one to have the last laugh in their battle.

The Indian pacer bowled short outside the off stump and Mayers was not in control to execute the big shot and holed it out to Bhuvneshwar Kumar at mid-wicket.

Arshdeep stretched his arms wide open and stared at the batter before he walked his way to the dugout.

“That’s exactly how youngsters are. That’s what IPL has done to Indian youngsters. None of the bowlers like to get hit. I am sure he must have planned it. He may have thought that ‘Mayers would step out, so I’ll try and bowl a bouncer’. And he got a wicket, so that’s a natural reaction. That’s how the game’s being played,” Parthiv told Cricbuzz.

I get very disappointed when Arshdeep Singh doesn’t get to play: Parthiv Patel

Arshdeep finished the match with 2/24 from four overs. He castled Akeal Hosein with an in-swinging yorker.

Arshdeep played only his second T20I match after impressing with consistent performances in the IPL. He made his debut against England but was dropped from the squad for the last two T20Is as India had to accommodate Jasprit Bumrah back into the side.

He was injured ahead of the first ODI match against England and hence did not feature in any of the six 50-over matches against England and West Indies.

Arshdeep has been bowling difficult overs for Punjab Kings (PBKS). He may not have taken 20 wickets in the tournament (IPL 2022), but he was bowling well. I get very disappointed when Arshdeep doesn’t get to play. Left-arm seamer bowling reverse swinging yorker to a leftie, that was definitely my favourite wicket (dismissal of Hosein),” Parthiv said.
