Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson on Sunday returned to form in the second ODI match against West Indies.

After struggling to score runs in the series opener, Samson slammed his maiden half-century in ODIs. Samson made 12 off 18 balls in the first game but his 51-ball 54, laced with three fours and three sixes, contributed to India’s win by two wickets.

It was Axar Patel’s stellar show in the end that saw India through the line and claim the series 2-0. In the course of winning the series, India created a world record of defeating the West Indies in 12 successive ODI bilateral series, overtaking Pakistan’s 11 against Zimbabwe.

Samson, who notched up his first fifty in T20 Internationals on the Ireland tour last month, repeated the feat in the longer white-ball format more precisely. The Kerala batter joined forces with Shreyas Iyer in the 18th over after Suryakumar Yadav’s departure. He started his innings with a boundary, clearing the fine leg off Kyle Mayers.

He lifted Hayden Walsh Jr for a couple of sixes over wide long-on and put one over the head of Akeal Hosein. Samson hit Jayden Seales for a boundary in the 38th over to reach fifty in a stylish way.

The wicketkeeper’s stay at the crease was shortened after the celebrations in the very next over. Samson mistimed a shot toward short fine leg, from where Kyle Mayers threw at the non-striker’s end, however, Romario Shepherd missed to collect but fortunately, the ball went through his knees and hit the stumps.

When Samson returned to the dugout, India still needed 105 runs in 11 overs. It was just before Axar steered the tourists to a spectacular chase through a whirlwind knock.

The third and final ODI will be played at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Wednesday (July 27).
