In the opening Twenty20 encounter of a five-match series at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Stadium, India captain Rohit Sharma continued his record-breaking streak by scoring a good 64 off 44 deliveries against West Indies.

As he led India from the front in the series opener, Rohit broke two significant records in the game’s shortest format.

On July 29, Rohit reached his 27th T20I fifty despite receiving little assistance from his colleagues in India’s revamped batting order. Rohit passed the previous skipper Virat Kohli on the list of batters with the most 50-plus scores in international cricket by reaching the milestone.

Virat Kohli is in second place with 30 fifty-plus scores, while Rohit Sharma tops the list with 4 centuries and 27 half-centuries in T20I cricket. Kohli has not reached a century in a T20I match. He has been rested for the current West Indies T20I series. Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, is now in third place with 27 fifty-plus runs, including a T20I hundred.

In the meantime, Rohit surpassed Martin Guptill on the list of batsmen with the most runs scored in men’s T20Is. On Friday, Rohit needed 21 runs to surpass the 3399-run  made by the New Zealand star opening batter. In the men’s T20I, Rohit has now scored 3443 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit’s new batting partner at the top, was second fiddle to his Mumbai Indians teammate in their opening 44-run partnership that took just 4.4 overs.

However, India’s middle order struggled after Akeal Hosein broke the opening stand by dismissing Suryakumar. Rishabh Pant only managed 14 off 12 balls, Shreyas Iyer was out for 0, while Hardik Pandya was out for one.

After hitting seven fours and two sixes, Rohit, who was headed for his fifth hundred, was bowled out for 64 by Jason Holder in the 15th over.
