Veteran India National Cricket Team left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan showered praise on the young right-handed opening batsman Shubman Gill, asserting that the “way he bats and times the ball is lovely to watch”.

The duo of Gill and Dhawan provided India with a great start in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team and helped them chase down the target of 190 runs in just 30.5 overs at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, August 18.

Gill scored 82 runs off 72 balls, including 10 fours and 1 six, and Dhawan scored 81 runs off 113 balls, including 9 fours. Also, the 192-run partnership between Dhawan and Gill is India’s second highest opening stand in a 10-wicket win in the ODIs.

Speaking after the match, Dhawan said that he feels like a youngster while batting with Gill and added that his rhythm with Gill has settled nicely.

“I am enjoying batting with the youngster [Gill] and I feel like a youngster too. I enjoyed the consistency from West Indies, “Shikhar Dhawan said after the team won the first ODI.

“I knew that once I was set, I would go after the bowlers. I wanted to rotate the strike as well and then was to accelerate. My rhythm with Gill has settled nicely. The way he bats and times the ball is lovely to watch. He has shown the consistency in converting fifties into bigger fifties,” said Dhawan.

Along with the bat, Dhawan was brilliant on the field in the first ODI. He grabbed two good catches in slip position to send back Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza. While talking about his fielding, Dhawan said that he enjoys fielding in slips.

“I enjoy [catching in slips] and it has become easy with experience,” Dhawan said.

Dhawan also lauded Indian bowlers for bundling out Zimbabwe for 189 runs in the first ODI and was pleased to see Deepak Chahar performing well in his comeback game.

“Our bowling unit did well and it was nice to see Deepak Chahar come back from injury and pick up three wickets,” he said.
