Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria questioned the selection of Indian pacer Avesh Khan over Umran Malik in the Zimbabwe ODI series.
On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad for three One-Day Internationals against Zimbabwe next month. Opening batter Shikhar Dhawan, who recently led the team in the West Indies ODI series, will once again don the captain’s armband.
Rajasthan pace bowler Deepak Chahar returns to the squad after a gap of six months. Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur will form pace attack for India, a similar one that featured in the West Indies ODIs recently.
Avesh Khan hasn’t performed well: Danish Kaneria
Avesh made his ODI debut in the second match against Nicholas Pooran & co. He went wicketless and conceded 54 runs from 10 overs. Barring his 4/18 against South Africa in the Rajkot T20I, Avesh hasn’t made any significant contribution in the provided opportunities after the IPL.
“Avesh Khan hasn’t performed well in the opportunities that he has got. I want to ask the selectors why they kept him in the squad. Is he there to be on the bench?” Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.
Zimbabwe tour was a good opportunity for selectors to give Umran Malik another opportunity: Danish Kaneria
Umran Malik, the pace sensation and one of the emerging picks of the IPL 2022, has played three T20I matches in the United Kingdom tour – two in Ireland and one against England. The 22-year-old wasn’t considered for the Zimbabwe One-Day Internationals.
“India have rested senior pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami. Umran Malik was a bit inconsistent in his initial games. But this was a good opportunity for the selectors to give him another chance,” Kaneria said.
“Arshdeep Singh also couldn’t find a place in the squad. The team management must play him consistently so that he gets more mature as a player,” he added.
India will commence the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe on August 18 at the Harare Sports Club.
