On Thursday, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Chennai Super Kings by five wickets, effectively ruining the ‘Men in Yellow’s chances of making the playoffs.

The CSK was required to win all of their remaining fixtures to provide a chance of finishing in the top four; however, the defeat to MI meant that the Super Kings failed to finish in the top four for only the second time in IPL history.

Unfortunately, for the first few overs of the game, the Decision Review System (DRS) was inaccessible owing to power outages. As a result, CSK lost an early wicket in Devon Conway, who was declared LBW out even though replays revealed that the ball had most likely missed the leg-stump.

Conway had been the Super Kings’ most consistent hitter in their previous three games, and his expulsion in the first over dealt the team a major blow.

‘If Mumbai were batting first then they would have suffered’: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, a former Indian cricketer, to believes it is a problem for the CSK. The DRS was activated after the first few overs of the match, but CSK had already deployed their top-order hitters.

“It seemed incredible that DRS was down due to a power outage. A generator can be utilized because the league is so large. Whatever program was present might have been run using the power produced by the backup system. On Cricbuzz, Sehwag remarked, “This is a serious matter for the BCCI.”

“What happens if the electricity goes out? Is the generator exclusively for stadium lighting and not for the broadcasters’ equipment? DRS should have been utilized if the contest was still going on. Or DRS should not have been utilized throughout the game because it put Chennai at a disadvantage. Mumbai would have suffered if they had batted first “Further, Virender Sehwag stated.

With 8 points from 12 matches, CSK is still in ninth place in the IPL 2022 points standings.
