Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma lavished praise on youngster Tilak Varma for taking the team past the finishing line against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Thursday.
MI snuffed out CSK’s faint hopes of making the cut in the IPL 2022 playoffs after a five-wicket win at the Wankhede stadium.
CSK vs MI: Tilak Varma resurrects MI innings after an early collapse
Mumbai Indians bowlers led by Daniel Sams’ fiery spell (3/16) bowled CSK out for 97 in 16 overs. Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya picked a couple of wickets each.
MI were reduced to 34 for four wickets down at the end of the fifth over as CSK’s new-ball pair of Mukesh Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh led the fightback.
Varma, who is the highest run-scorer of the team in IPL 2022 and a promising find of the season, showed calm and composed character at the crease.
Varma hit 34 off 32 balls with the help of four boundaries and forged 48 runs with Hrithik Shokeen, who scored 18 in 23 balls.
The duo were separated by Moeen Ali as the off-spinner cleaned up Shokeen in the 13th over. Tim David smashed Moeen for a couple of sixes to seal the game for Mumbai Indians with 31 balls to spare.
Tilak Varma got the technique and temperament: Rohit Sharma
With 368 runs in 12 innings at 40.89, Varma is the seventh highest run-scorer in the tournament. Rohit hailed the Hyderabad player for his temperament in crunch situations.
“He (Tilak Varma) has been brilliant, playing for the first year, having such a calm head is never easy. I feel he’s going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
“He’s got the technique and temperament. A lot of things are looking bright for him. And there’s hunger as well. He’s on the right path,” he added.
MI has already bowed out of the tournament with nine losses, the most for the successful IPL team in one season. They play Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 17.
