Gill recently stated that he had learned some ‘cheeky shots,’ to which Virender Sehwag responded that a batter-like Gill does not need to add anything new to his arsenal.

Gill and Matthew Wade, the Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, opened the innings. In the first over, he attempted to take on Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera but failed to time a pull shot perfectly and was caught at backward point by Krunal Pandya.

Many people were not amused by Gill’s attitude and labelled him “reckless” because GT was seeking a tiny objective of 159. As he evaluated Gill’s dismissal, Sehwag was similarly unimpressed by his failure.

He plays normal cricket, He can give a better start: Virender Sehwag

Sehwag emphasized Gill’s batting approach and suggested ways for the young opener to enhance his game.

“I believe he is an ODI batter. Because in T20 cricket, guys who can knock boundaries at will inside the Powerplay are the ones who succeed. That is the area in which he must improve.”

“He has made statements to the effect that he has learned certain cheeky shots, but that he does not need to play cheeky shots because of his batting. Even if he just plays regular cricket, he can get the team off to a stronger start “According to Sehwag

Sehwag gave instances of some of Indian cricket’s and the IPL’s best openers, describing how they were able to thrive without trying too hard and raise their strike rate just by spending time at the crease.

“But he must remember that when it comes to T20 cricket, he either plays too fast or too slow. He had a strike rate of 120 last year, and we thought he should enhance it. I’m hoping he doesn’t start at 150 this year and get off track. Badoni and Hooda demonstrated that strike rate can be enhanced while playing regularly “Sehwag added.

“Gill, on the other hand, has to get there. He gets out after scoring 25-30 runs. Once you hit 60, 70, or 80, your strike rate will rise. That is when you are free to play. Did Sachin Tendulkar, myself, or Gautam Gambhir play those daring strokes as openers? No, I don’t believe so. Before being cheeky and scoring quickly, you can score runs.”

Gujarat Titans beat Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets to begin their IPL campaign with a victory. With two balls to spare in a 159-run chase, Rahul Tewatia (40 not out) and Abhinav Manohar (15*) kept their cool and guided Gujarat to victory.
