Aaron Finch expressed his disappointment at not being selected in the IPL auction, but later received a call from Brendon McCullum for the IPL, and was overjoyed to hear that he will be playing in the IPL.

The IPL auction for the next 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was full of surprises and shocks.

Finch is the only player to have played for all eight T20 teams in previous seasons, but no team expressed interest in signing the Australian white-ball captain for the 2022 edition, and he went undrafted.

Finch scored 2005 runs at an average of 25.71 in 85 IPL matches for eight clubs, including 14 half-centuries.

Aaron Finch discussed the IPL Auction Days and his attempt to get picked in the mega auction:

Aaron Finch struck the ground running in only his second game of the season, coming off a 28-ball 58 in a high-scoring run chase against Rajasthan Royals. The Australian men’s limited-overs captain, recent T20 World Cup-winning skipper, and Kolkata Knight Riders’ opening batter were caught up with by KKR.

During auction days, he talks about his anxieties and expressed his disappointment at not being selected in the IPL auction, but later received a call from Brendon McCullum for the IPL.

Q. Tell us about your emotions during the IPL Auction Days as an international player.

Aaron Finch: I believe it is simply a matter of personal preference. I believe we were playing a game. On the same day last year, we played a game versus Sri Lanka. As a result, you don’t give it any thought. However, there have been moments in the past when you were scared because you were hoping to be chosen.

It’s a fantastic competition to be a part of, and I think you’ll miss it when you’re not here. I believe that having the opportunity to train and play with the finest players in the world regularly improves everyone. So that’s what you’re missing out on the most, and that’s what makes you scared about missing out on opportunities.

Q. Were you disappointed that you didn’t get a bid this year at the auction?

Finch: Of course, that’s correct. Yeah. But when Baz [Head Coach Brendon McCullum] called to offer me to join KKR, I was thrilled and jumped at the opportunity.
