Left-handed opener Devdutt Padikkal was expected to get a huge bid in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) auction and as expected he got a huge one from Rajasthan Royals (RR), who got him for INR 7.75 crores. Padikkal rose to the limelight after two amazing seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Padikkal had made his Indian Premier League debut in IPL 2022 for the then Virat Kohli-led side and immediately left a huge impact scoring over 400 runs and winning the Emerging Player of the Tournament award. The southpaw played 29 games for RCB where he scored 884 runs at an average of 31.57 and a strike rate of 125.03.

However, he was not retained by the RCB franchise, which went for Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.

When Padikkal’s name came up for the IPL 2022 auction, which began in Bengaluru on February 12, day one of the two-day event. Royal Challengers Bangalore were quick to put their paddles up for Padikkal but faced stiff competition from Rajasthan Royals.

Then Mumbai Indians entered the fray and held the bid at INR 7 crores, but Royals won by bidding INR 7.75 crores for him. The Rajasthan Royals posted a video of Padikkal reacting to joining the Pink Brigade for the IPL 2022 season.

He said in a video posted by RR on their Twitter: “Hi Rajasthan Family, This is Devdutt Padikkal here, and I am really happy to be joining you guys for the upcoming season. And I am really thankful for the franchise, and the management to have shown that faith in me, and picking me in the auction.

I am looking forward to working with the likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, who are such amazing professionals and have achieved so much in their career. And I’m really looking forward to working with them and at the same time improving my game as well. So hopefully we can have a really good season ahead together and I just want to enjoy and have fun with you guys then. Halla Bol.”

The IPL 2022 is expected to begin on March 27 and will feature 10 teams.
