Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer opined that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might not look for pace bowler Deepak Chahar’s replacement in the IPL 2022.

Chahar, who missed five games of IPL 2022 for CSK, was ruled out of the tournament owing to a back injury. CSK are yet to name a replacement for the 29-year-old speedster.

IPL 2022: CSK will show confidence in the same team: Wasim Jaffer on Deepak Chahar’s replacement

The four-time IPL champions have played the likes of Mukesh Choudhary, Tushar Deshpande and Chris Jordan as their frontline seam bowlers. Choudhary has often opened the bowling attack with the new ball. Jaffer is of the opinion that CSK will not name any replacement for Chahar and continue with the same team.

“I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like they are going for a replacement. They would have by now because they have already played five matches. I don’t know the playoffs situation but we’ve been seeing Chennai for years and they don’t make a lot of changes. They’ll show confidence in the same team and expect better performance,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

CSK can also explore the option of playing 19-year-old Rajvardhan Hangargekar, who was one of the rising stars in India’s victorious U19 World Cup campaign in the Caribbean. Jaffer believes CSK might not give the opportunity to the youngster until the later part of the tournament.

“If they wanted to play him, would have given him chance from the start. Now that you’ve already invested three (four) matches in Mukesh Choudhary so they want to try and stick with him. And this is Chennai’s policy as well – they rarely bring in new players else they maintain that continuity,” Jaffer said.

“I don’t think we’ll see Hangargekar just yet. He might get in at a later stage in the tournament. This team will probably continue till then,” he added.

CSK will play against Gujarat Titans on Sunday (April 17) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
