Daniel Vettori, a former RCB captain, and who also captained Kohli during his IPL tenure seemed dissatisfied with Kohli’s approach to his innings yesterday.

He has only one fifty-plus score in IPL 2022, and his strike rate of 111.09 is the third-lowest among batsmen with at least 150 runs this season.

Kohli was dismissed for a 33-ball 30 by a blistering Moeen Ali offbreak in the 10th over after being tempted into a long drive. It was a replica of his dismissal to Moeen last year in the Chennai Test.

Kohli played a handful of 16 dot balls on Wednesday. The fact that it occurred after Glenn Maxwell’s run out in the previous over, following Kohli’s terrible misjudgment, only added to the team’s troubles. Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror, both uncapped, contributed breezy knocks to the Royal Challengers’ total of 173.

Former West Indies Legend Ion Bishop believes, “For a time, he wasn’t even going at a run-a-ball, or he was simply going at a run-a-ball,” Bishop remarked on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Timeout analysis show. “He didn’t get far, and he didn’t seem motivated. He hit one [six] over extra-cover off the seamer, and then he moved ahead to a run-a-ball before returning.”

“This is something we’ve seen with Virat throughout his career, not just this season. He’ll fly out – he didn’t fly out tonight – and then slow down, as I recall from last season and even from time to time internationally. As a result, I’m concerned.”

Daniel Vettori on Kohli’s dismissal on Wednesday, “It all comes down to intent: Kohli never seemed like he was looking for anything other than a single. So you put your foot in the crease and wait for the ball to come your way. You can’t manipulate a single thing if the ball is in the perfect place.”

After three straight losses in the IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore got back on track. They won by 13 runs over Chennai Super Kings.
