The IPL 2022 playoffs will be determined by a super over in case of any disruption caused by uncertain factors like weather or a spike in COVID-19 cases.
According to an IPL briefing, the league standings of the team will be considered to decide the winners if the ground conditions do not permit the play to go ahead.
IPL 2022 Playoffs: Matches will be reduced to five overs at the minimum
Gujarat Titans will play against Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 1 on May 24 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Lucknow Super Giants will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator match on May 25 at the same venue.
The loser of Qualifier 1 will play against the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2 on May 27 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The final will be held on May 29 in Ahmedabad.
In case the match gets delayed in the first three playoff fixtures, the game can commence at 9:40 pm and the final game can start at 10:10 pm as the playoffs guidelines mentioned, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
“The number of overs in the playoff match may, if necessary, be reduced so that each side has the opportunity to bat for five overs,” the guidelines read.
“For the Eliminator and each Qualifier playoff matches (where there is no reserve day), in the event that it is not possible to schedule a five-over match to complete by the end of the extra time on the original day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the relevant Eliminator or Qualifier match,” the guidelines added.
IPL 2022 final: Super Over to determine results of the match if play gets disrupted
The Super Over would need to kick off at 12:50 AM latest for the disrupted games to complete and for the final, it must start at 1:20 am.
“For the final, in the event that it is not possible to schedule a five over match to be completed by the end of the extra time on the reserve day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the final. This means that the pitch and ground must be ready for play so that the Super Over can start at the latest by 1.20am (final),” the guidelines read.
There will be a reserve day for the IPL final – May 30 but the same facility won’t apply to the two Qualifiers and the Eliminator match. If one innings is played in the first three playoff games and the second innings cannot be played further then the results will be determined via Duckworth Lewis Method (DLS).
