Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings lavished praise on skipper Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy in IPL 2022. Iyer, who was bought for a whopping sum of INR 12.25 crore, was appointed as the new captain of the side.
Iyer had already impressed with the leadership role at Delhi Capitals (DC) after leading them in 41 IPL games in more than two seasons.
Delhi Capitals’ progress under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy in IPL
The Mumbai player took over the captaincy reins from Gautam Gambhir in the middle of IPL 2018 and under his leadership, the Capitals qualified for the first time in IPL playoffs in 2019 after a span of seven years.
The following year Delhi Capitals made its maiden appearance in the IPL final but lost to Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians. However, Iyer was not the captain of the franchise last season after the player was ruled out of the first phase owing to a shoulder injury.
Shreyas Iyer has an incredible work ethic: Sam Billings
Iyer had a great start with his new IPL team having won three of the five matches this season. Billings, who played for Delhi Capitals during 2016-17, said Iyer is a very calm and confident person and was amazed by his skipper’s ethics.
“I am really impressed by Shreyas. His development as a human, player, and the captain has been phenomenal over the last few years. It was five-six years ago that we played together (at Delhi Capitals).
“He is very calm and very confident. He is very confident in his own abilities. He has an incredible work ethic,” Billings told TimesofIndia.com.
“Shreyas is incredibly calm as a captain. He backs his players and gives them freedom. He is a natural leader. There is no doubt that he can go on and lead many different teams for many many years. He is a good friend of mine and he is someone who has impressed me a lot in terms of his development,” he added.
KKR will play their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 15 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
