Sanju Samson hasn’t exactly converted it on the big stage, and he hasn’t shown consistency in his career, which are his two main criticisms.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri supported the youngster to have a solid IPL 2022 season on Tuesday, comparing his abilities to Virat Kohli’s.

Sanju Samson has long been regarded as India’s next big thing. He has shown flashes of his brilliance in white-ball cricket with big scores, and he has been a regular in the Indian Premier League (IPL), now leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Samson, as per Shastri, has demonstrated maturity and consistency in his play. Samson’s game has been harmed by having too many shots in his arsenal, as per ex-India all-rounder, who believes Samson needs to focus on one shot to improve his performance.

“I notice a sense of tranquility in him this season when I look at him.” Maturity has crept up on me. I simply have a feeling he’ll have a great year this year. This season, I believe he will be a lot more consistent. He has a group of people around him who will make him feel at ease so he can continue to play his natural game of attacking and scoring,” he said.

“His greatest issue was when a player has too many shots and wants to play them all in the first five overs…the that’s an issue he has.” I believe he will be a lot more consistent if he can be choosy and choose the right shots depending on the surface and the conditions.

“He’s been around for quite a while. You can’t make the same error after ten years and expect to get out at the age of 20-25. You’ll have a coach come over and smack it in the face.”

Samson made his India debut in the T20I format in 2015 and has only played 13 matches in the format, as well as one ODI appearance.
