IPL Auction 2022: Charu Sharma Reveals How He Made It To The IPL 2022 Auction On The Spur Of The Moment

Charu Sharma, the director of Pro Kabbadi League, revealed how he was approached to turn up for the IPL 2022 auction on Saturday.

During the Day 1 of the two-day mega auction event, Hugh Edmeades, who has been conducting IPL auctions since 2019, suddenly collapsed on the floor.

He was attained by the medical staff immediately after he fell down from the podium while he was engaged in Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga’s bidding.

Charu Sharma, who is a renowned TV presenter and commentator, took over the proceedings from Edmeades after the unfortunate incident on Saturday (February 12).

Charu Sharma revealed that IPL chairman Brijesh Patel contacted him to rush to the venue (Hotel ITC Gardenia) in Bengaluru.

“Put on your shoes and come here,” the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mentioned on the phone. There is an emergency,” Charu Sharma told Cricbuzz.

“When I reached, I was told what had happened to Hugh Edmeades – the original IPL auctioneer from England, who fell off the dais due to Postural Hypotension. I said ‘fine, let’s do it. We had a 15-minute session. I inquired about what all had been conducted and what was left to do. The IPL officials then asked me if the break should be extended. I said ‘don’t’. I had some fun,” he added.

Charu has been a quizmaster for several TV programmes and has also hosted several award functions.

“Yes, fun. It is a profession that is not alien to me. It was just another day with the hammer. The difference was, maybe, more people were watching and following it. A professional job is a professional job, two people involved or two million or two billion and whether it is a Rs 2 auction or a Rs 1 billion auction,” he said. 

Chorus Sharma was also the CEO of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural season of the tournament.
