In Friday night’s IPL 2022 match against the Punjab Kings, Aakash Chopra pointed out that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) hitters almost messed up a relatively straightforward run chase (PBKS).

After being asked to bat first, KKR knocked out PBKS for 137 runs. However, they were down to 51/4 at one point until Andre Russell and Sam Billings put up an unbeaten 90-run stand to take them down the line.

In a video posted to his YouTube account, Aakash Chopra pondered on KKR’s run chase. Regarding Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, he said:

“Kolkata could have had a better day; let’s face it, they needed to improve their game. It didn’t get off to a good start. Venkatesh Iyer does not appear to be in terrific shape, which is not good news. Ajinkya is in excellent form, but he has already lost his wicket twice.”

The dismissal of KKR captain Iyer: Aakash Chopra

Shreyas Iyer’s desire to dominate the leg-spinners, according to Aakash Chopra, is contributing to his departure. He elaborated:

“Shreyas Iyer has a problem with leg-spinners; as soon as he sees the ball, he wants to knock a six; the ball went straight up in the air; he was removed for the fourth or fifth time by Rahul Chahar, and he was dismissed by Hasaranga in the last match. He’s far too good a player to waste shots like this. You need to get your act together, Shreyas.”

While Nitish Rana was expected to put in a bit more effort, the respected expert decided that the Russell-Billings partnership salvaged the day for KKR. Chopra remarked:

“The wickets continued to fall regularly. Nitish Rana is whacked on the pad right in front of him – it’s been three matches now, you need to put in a bit more effort. They were fortunate that Andre Russell and Sam Billings teamed up, and then the way they hit – Andre Russell in, ball out when he’s on the form.”

Andre Russell hit an unbeaten 70 from 31 balls, including eight sixes, to help the two-time champions reach the 138-run goal with more than five overs to spare.
