Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer said Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Kane Williamson made a lot of errors in his captaincy against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday. Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals thumped SRH by 61 runs in their opening game of IPL 2022 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

SRH won the toss and asked Royals to bat first, SRH pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a breathtaking first over to England batter Jos Buttler. Had he not bowled a no-ball on the penultimate delivery of the over, Bhuvneshwar had accounted the Royals’ opener wicket for a naught.

IPL 2022: RR beat SRH by 61 runs

Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal (20) put 58 runs in the powerplay overs for the Royals but the duo departed very soon. Skipper Sanju Samson (55 off 27 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (41 off 29 balls) put 73 runs together for the fourth wicket before Padikkal was cleaned up by Malik’s nip-backer.

Rajasthan Royals posted a gigantic score of 210/6 in the first innings and their bowlers made it look easy to defend the target as SRH were restricted to 149/7 at the end of the game. SRH were reduced to 9 for 3 in five overs with Williamson, Rahul Tripathi and Nicholas Pooran were back in the dugout.

Very disappointing for SRH: Wasim Jaffer

South Africa batter Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 57 and all-rounder Washington Sundar blazed 40 off 14 balls including five boundaries and a couple of sixes. However, those knocks could push the team to a respectable score but couldn’t avoid the defeat.

Jaffer is of the opinion that Markram could have batted ahead of Pooran and Sundar could be promoted in the batting order. The former Punjab Kings batting coach expressed his astonishment on Williamson’s poor captaincy against the Royals.

“I felt Kane Williamson got a lot of things wrong tactically and it is a very surprising thing to say as he is such a good captain. Aiden Markram could have batted ahead of Nicolas Pooran and Pooran could have come at number 5,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

“Washington Sundar batting at number 8, he could also have been pushed up the order. You need to get these things right. But it is better for them to go wrong in the initial games rather than in later ones.”

“Very disappointing for SRH. They won the toss, but this is the first time that we have seen a team batting first win a game in IPL 2022. A very forgetful game for them as everything went wrong. From bowling in the powerplay, to bowling in middle-overs, and batting too. They lost the game in the powerplay itself while batting,” he added.

SRH will play their next game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 4 while RR will meet Mumbai Indians on April 2.
