Former Australian leg-spinner Brad Hogg has claimed that the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have committed a mistake by not bringing in all-rounders into the squad. Virat Kohli and co. lost Daniel Sams and Washington Sundar for different reasons. Hogg feels the ones brought in aren’t a like-for-like replacement and this might cost the side.
Ahead of the IPL 2021, few Aussie players from the RCB squad pulled out. As a result, the franchise roped in replacements but Hogg suggested their roles don’t match up with the players they lost.
“There are two big losses for RCB – Daniel Sams and Washington Sundar. They are two good all-rounders in the lower-order, who give good dimensions with both bat and ball. That is going to be a huge loss for them.”
“The replacements they have got are David, Chameera, Hasaranga and George Garton. They don’t really match up with the all-rounders that they are missing. I think RCB have made a mistake by not going after all-rounders,” Hogg said on his YouTube channel.
Hogg also expressed concern over the batting issues for the side. Apart from the big three – Kohli, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell – in the squad, they don’t have sufficient power in the batting department.
“Glenn Maxwell, can he continue the batting prowess that he showed in the first phase? He has got a bit of a break. We know that he has had a lot of ups and downs in his career. That balance is bit of a worry for me. If RCB lose Maxwell and Virat Kohli early, they will be relying heavily on AB de Villiers. I don’t think they have got enough batting around them to cover that loss there considering they are lacking in the all-round department as well.”
“I don’t think RCB will get into the grand final at the end” – Brad Hogg
The 50-year-old continued by stating that the RCB side will get into the playoffs. However, he was skeptical of their chances to enter the grand final. Brad Hogg underlined that the changes made won’t really benefit them.
“RCB have won five games from seven at the moment. They only need to win three games out of the next seven to get through. I think they will just sneak over the line. But because of the recruits and the changes they have made, I don’t think they will get into the grand final at the end,” he added.
Kohli’s men sit in third place on the table. They will resume their campaign with a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on September 20, Monday.
